Book structure
Eight chapters, each built around a theme and a core value
Each chapter is organized into distinct sections and includes literary theory to foster deeper engagement with texts, reading comprehension activities with scaffolded support, grammar and vocabulary aligned to academic needs, and writing and critical thinking tasks that encourage real-world application.

Apertura
Each chapter opens with a photo and questions that encourage exploration and analysis, plus a guiding question linked to the key words of the Vocabulary Workbook, which appear in blue throughout the book. The chapter also introduces the core value it will explore, so students recall prior knowledge and reflect on what they will learn.

Teoría literaria
The characteristics and definitions of various literary genres, and how to study key aspects of literary analysis: the author’s intent, text structure, cultural elements, literary devices and more.

Lectura
Literary texts connected to the chapter’s core value and main theme, with selected works by renowned international authors and an interesting fact about each one. Every text comes with comprehension and analysis questions; unfamiliar words are highlighted in yellow and defined in the margins.

Después de leer
Three pages of activities that develop reading comprehension and stimulate critical thinking: a vocabulary activity based on the readings, general comprehension tasks, an activity on the chapter’s core value and another that sends students to the Vocabulary Workbook through the words highlighted in blue.

Comprensión lectora
Three stages: “Leo” presents a short text and an exploration activity; “Aprendo” defines and explains a specific reading skill, such as telling facts from opinions or identifying the type of narrator; and “Comprendo” applies the skill learned.

Estudio de la lengua
Three sections: Vocabulary, to expand students’ lexical knowledge; Grammar, focused on the formal aspects of the language; and Spelling, with orthographic rules and conventions.

Redacción
Writing techniques for various types of texts, with examples, definitions and step-by-step guidance to follow a clear structure. Students then apply what they’ve learned in a writing activity, and a final task is devoted to oral expression.

Repaso
A two-page spread that reviews the most important skills and concepts of the chapter. The final activity measures the student’s attitude toward the value introduced at the beginning, and a callout sends students to the Workbook for additional practice.

Otros tipos de textos

The series also includes a Workbook so students can practice and reinforce the skills studied in each chapter.
Why “Savia”
Nourishing each student’s growth
Savia is a symbol of energy and life. It is the substance that provides plants with the nutrients they need. Thanks to savia, the plant grows, bears fruit, and renews itself.
We have named our new Español de Herencia series from SM-Edinumen USA Savia because it aims to nourish each student’s knowledge and support their academic growth.
The Savia project has been one of the most widely used programs for the formal development of language among students of Hispanic origin around the world—successfully implemented with over ten million students in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia, Spain, and more. It has now been adapted to meet the needs of heritage learners in the U.S. by a team of experts with extensive experience in the field, under the coordination of Edinumen USA.
We are confident that the Savia series will provide an invaluable space for student learning and growth. We hope it becomes a powerful tool in their educational journey.
